Investment Division Overview

Manulife's Investment Division manages the Company's General Fund on-balance sheets assets (GA) and through Manulife Asset Management, manages assets for institutional clients and investment funds in key markets around the world. Manulife Asset management also provides investment management services to affiliates' retail clients through product offerings of Manulife and John Hancock.

The Division manages a broad range of investments including public and private bonds, public and private equities, mortgages, real estate, oil and gas, infrastructure, timberland, farmland and asset allocation strategies. The Division has physical presence in key international financial centers, including Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia and throughout South East Asia. The Investment Division is a significant market player with more than C$650 billion in assets under management.

Overview of the Role

The Chief Data Office in close partnership with key business stakeholders, Global Investment Operations and Information Services will support the transformation of the organization to ensure data is leveraged as a strategic asset supporting our business goals. The group's objectives include:
  • A single, central source for data which is easy to access and describes how the data was obtained
  • Data quality continually monitored and accuracy improved
  • Common standards and policies for data governance
  • Flexible reporting tools to access data and adapt to changing business or regulatory requirements

Reporting to the Chief Data Officer, the AVP, Head of Advanced/Operational Analytics will lead a senior team of advanced analytics/data science professionals to explore ways to monetize data assets using advanced analytical techniques. They will couple their advanced analytics experience with a solid understanding ofthe Investment Division's business and operations to implement the data strategy.

  • Establish the advanced/operational analytics function to significantly contribute to the achievement of the division's strategic objectives
  • Explore ways to monetize data assets using advanced analytical techniques
  • Work closely with businesses to identify use cases
  • Drive business growth through data sources and capabilities
  • Identify new data sources for ingesting into Data Reservoir
  • Improve use of BI tools throughout the Division
  • Develop operational analytics and dashboards
  • Data Owner for operational data domain
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the division's data strategy that enables the most effective use of the data assets
  • Ensure data is available, reliable, consistent, accessible, secure, and timely to support the mission and activities of the division
  • Support the successful implementation of the Global Optimization initiatives
  • Collaborate with other Divisions and Group Functions to improve the overall level of data design enterprise-wide

  • Provide direction, supervise and evaluate staff; Develop, coach and motivate a global team capable of providing a wide range of technical expertise, training, and support to all units
  • Promote organizational excellence through development of a culture of accountability, innovation and teamwork

  • Graduate degree in a quantitative discipline (engineering, applied math, physics, statistics, or computer science) with asset management or financial services industry experience
  • Proven application of machine learning techniques to build predictive models
  • Expertise in Hadoop and related technologies/techniques
  • Expertise in statistical programs such as R-programming language
  • 10+ years of relevant business experience combined with a minimum of 5 years of Data Science experience
  • Experience in using visual analytic techniques to present information in new and innovative ways
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Constructive challenge and influencing skills
  • Experience in translating between business and technology worlds
  • Champion of change and effectively managing the implementation of new ideas / improvements
  • Confident when dealing with investment professionals, senior management, technologists and other stakeholders
