Geisinger Health System is a seeking a Senior HPC Data Scientist to join our team in Danville, Pa.

JOB SUMMARY:

This position will involve designing and implementing the core infrastructure for the HPC center. This person may be asked to assist in the implementation of analysis tools and pipelines for affiliate departments and independent research labs. He/she will be expected to apply their expertise with HPC to help users of the system effectively utilize the resources in the most efficient manner possible.

This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Research Computing. This position may manage up to two direct reports who will assist in the implementation and ongoing maintenance of the HPC infrastructure. Although not a part of Information Technology, this position will work in a collaborative role with those IT resources supporting the High Performance Environment.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Operational Responsibilities: This position involves a primary operational role coupled with ancillary roles as needs arise:
  • Development and maintenance of research infrastructure. Architect solutions for HPC research infrastructure, with special emphasis in satisfying the institution's need to retain a high degree of reliability, flexibility, and security. Keeps up to date with emerging developments in the field of Information Technology and High Performance Computing and to use this expanding knowledge to continuously improve Geisinger's HPC offerings.
  • Assists affiliates in computational projects in a variety of disciplines from computational genomics to graph theory. Offers advice and programming assistance to users in order to allow researchers to most effectively use the available resources.
  • Helps educate users in the availability and best practices for HPC computing. Acts as a champion of the HPC, encouraging adoption by users and leading training sessions for relevant audiences.
  • Collaborates with all levels of Geisinger IT in order to develop and facilitate organization best practices in terms of administration of Linux machines.
  • Supervises the programming and/or data scientists working in the HPC environment including hiring, evaluation, work planning and disciplinary action.

*Academic Responsibilities:
  • While the primary duties of this position involve systems administration, actively assists the research process. Integral to the process of design and implementation of many of the academic research projects conducted using the HPC Center.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related fields) required. Minimum of eight years experience in the required areas listed below.

OR

Master's Degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related fields) required. Minimum of five years experience in the required area listed below.

Experience in the following is required:
  • Expert level Linux system administration skills, preferably using Red Hat Enterprise or derivative (CentOS, Scientific Linux, etc.) distributions. Red Hat certifications (RHCE, RHCSA, RHCA) a significant plus.
  • Experience using IT automation tools such as Ansible, CFEngine, Puppet.
  • Expertise with one or more scripting languages (bash, Python, Perl, etc.)
  • Familiarity with systems programming languages (C/C++, Rust, Go, etc.)
  • Experience using virtualization technologies and techniques (OpenStack, Docker, etc.)
  • Proficiency in modern source control programs (git, svn) and software engineering best practices.
  • Proficiency with parallel programming
  • Experience in debugging, profiling, benchmarking, and optimizing code for use in a HPC context

Experience in the following is preferred:
  • Experience with Matlab, R, or other popular scientific computing and data science tools
  • Experience in GPU programming and optimization
  • Familiarity with at least one modern web framework (GWT, AngularJS, etc.)
  • Direct experience with numerical simulation, computational statistics, or numerical science
  • Experience working in a regulatory-restricted environment; past experience with Protected Health Information a plus
  • Experience implementing and adhering to cybersecurity best practices; security certifications a plus


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Will be working in an office environment. Will be working on a personal computer 80% of the work day. May be required to travel off site for projects and /or meetings.
