Director, Work Environment Analytics

The Director of Work Environment Analytics for Workplace Effectiveness (WE) will report to the WE Sr. Director. This position will build and lead a team of at least three data researchers with deep expertise in statistics, quantitative as well as qualitative analysis, and data systems. The leader of this group will also heavily guide and partner with external advisors, academics and thought leaders. This position plays a pivotal role in informed decision making at the VP level in support of gEC site strategy. Impact of decisions will determine how to shape $1B worth of capital by 2020. This role will also provide analytics to leverage within the Roche network globally.

The focus of the Work Environment Analytics organization is to harness the collective power of data, systems and analytics to generate actionable insights. The team will ensure the WE and Site Services organization has the analytic capabilities needed to ensure data-driven decisions to support its strategies and initiatives for the SSF campus. Data analytics will include the development of an analytics strategy and metrics architecture to support the design of effective work environments for 12,000 employees in SSF. This will include quantitative and qualitative methods, such as surveys, ethnography and analysis of unobtrusive metrics (such as badge and utilization data). The Work Environment analytics team will utilize data from multiple sources internally and externally. This team will also support SSF-based GNE/Roche executives who want to experiment with global collaboration focused on social practices and technology adoption.

The candidate chosen for this position will develop critical executive presentations (including crafting "the story") for the Vice President of Site Services to deliver to the Genentech and Roche Corporate Executive Committees and Board of Directors. This Director may also be called at times to deliver presentations, including to the Site Advisory Committee (sponsored by the Vice President of Site Services, and represented by VPs from each of the core functions on the SSF site).

This visible position requires excellent strategic thinking, communication and presentation skills, stakeholder influence, in addition to powerful analytic and scientific rigor.

Key Deliverables:
  • Build relationships and work with business leaders, external advisors, thought partners and academics as well as the Work Environment analytics team to advise the work environment solutions on how to best support the business strategy through workplace analytics
  • Develop the 3-5+ year strategy for the Work Environment Analytics organization and identify analytics needs, objectives and practices for this newly created organization.
  • Develop and implement the systems and processes needed to ensure measurement tools and content management platforms to develop actionable insights for decision making and solutions that cut across all of GNE SSF campus and Site Services charter, including security, transportation, operations, real estate, space planning and new work environments.
  • Provide leadership and management oversight to the data systems leader who, with his/her team of contractors, manages all data systems, analysis and reporting of space utilization, capital investments and ROI on behalf of Site Services VP. This enables common financial, H/C and other metrics that enable business cases and scenarios to optimize use of space and GNE campus plan investments.
  • Translate business objectives into measurable hypotheses and experiments using data modeling.
  • Oversee the creation of results from analyses and experiments that yield insights and foresight to drive GNE investments in technology and infrastructure. Impact of decisions will determine how to shape $1B worth of capital by 2020.
  • Generate groundbreaking white paper contributions to the industry and will represent WE and GNE in some industry conferences and forums.
  • Manage a $2M+ budget targeted for social science academics and consultants.
  • Be an active thought partner and collaborator with Director, HR People Analytics.
  • Lead the tracking of work environment industry trends and social media analytics.
Who You Are

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following qualifications:
  • Outstanding internal consulting and influence skills, highly effective teamwork and collaboration skills, 15+ years of experience in corporate environments and 10+ years of broad experience in big data/analytics required. At least seven years' experience in managing data scientists, data engineers and data systems professionals are required.
  • Seasoned leader who has hired and built high-performing teams focused on analytics of social sciences.
  • Able to deliver results in an ambiguous, complex global network. Culturally sensitive.
  • Experience in facilitating the development of strategy-and application of analytics as a driver for enabling business decisions. Must have knowledge and understanding of statistical methods, algorithms, and data mining techniques and tools.
  • Outstanding written and communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively up and down, and especially the ability to create a story for an executive audience. Gifted at presenting complex and/or new ideas with clarity and simplicity. Exceptional at preparing and delivering communications at the executive level.
  • Excellent planning and prioritization skills with the ability to direct the work of multiple internal and external resources. Exceptional at multitasking and adapting theirs and others' priorities. Able to synthesize large amounts of information. Able to deliver results in shifting environment.
  • Partners with internal customers and stakeholders to deliver business needs. Seeks to not just solve issues but identify root cause and permanent solutions. Takes a proactive approach to anticipating needs and leads with recommendations.
  • Education: Master's Degree in Big Data/Analytics, Socio-Tech Engineering, or Business; MBA highly desirable. Ph.D. preferred.
  • Previous biotech or life science experience preferred.
  • This position is not eligible for relocation. Potential for up to 25% travel to industry events and within Genentech's network of places.
