Subject: Poll Results: Singularity - will machines outsmart humans?

The previous KDnuggets Poll asked:

Some scientists worry that machines will become smarter than humans (so-called "Singularity") and suggest limits on AI research to prevent this. Others think that AI super-intelligence will help humans ("Singularity" will be good).

The results were almost equally split, with about 40% each between

  • Singularity won't happen: machines will never become smarter than humans
  • Singularity will happen and we can't control it: machines will become smarter than humans, but it is impossible to ban AI research worldwide

David, Singularity

While it may be the case that individual singularities will occur (e.g. there may be a computer smarter than Ray Kurzweil), I don't think that all humanity will suffer defeat. Unlike Deep Blue, which had a specific functionality, adaptive and evolving strategic thinking have taken a very long time to develop and will take a very long time to implement. By then, we, or some of us, may have advanced yet again.
