Traditionally, papers on machine learning applications have been poorly represented at ICML. This year, ICML-2000 is making an effort to attract such papers. Since many KDnuggets readers are involved in applied ML research, I wanted to elaborate on changes that may affect their decision to submit a paper. - ICML-2000 is specifically inviting papers that discuss issues arising in the application of machine learning algorithms. Such issues include the effect of the developers' decisions about problem formulation, representation, data quality, and reward function on the learning process. Of course, traditional algorithm-centered papers are welcome as well. - Applications papers will be reviewed by program committee members with expertise in ML applications. Reviews will be resolved by an area chair and the program chair. - The review process will allow for conditional acceptance of papers, contingent on changes specified by the area chair. This should make the process less "binary", and accomodate some papers with correctible problems. I'm hoping that ICML's traditional strength in machine learning algorithms can benefit applied researchers, and that ICML can become a forum in which applications work is appreciated.
