UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER

NIKEL - the Northern Ireland Knowledge Engineering Laboratory at
Jordanstown

The Northern Ireland Knowledge Engineering Laboratory (NIKEL) was
established in 1992 with financial assistance from the European
Community. Today it is a flourishing centre with staff and students
carrying out leading edge research and technology transfer in Medical
Informatics, data mining and internet technology research.  One of
NIKEL's growing technical focuses is the application of data mining to
Internet data and the laboratory has won substantial funding to carry
out two new projects in this area.

CERENA

CERENA is a multi-million Euro project, funded by the EU fifth
framework programme, and includes ABN-AMRO from the Netherlands,
Pixelpark AG and Fraunhofer IAO from Germany, Pixel park mmk AG from
Switzerland and University of Ulster as UK partner.

The objective of CERENA is to facilitate internet retail banking
competitiveness in Europe by using data mining technology to deliver services
such as personalisation to the customers of the bank. CERENA will extend and
implement the latest data mining technologies, making the marketing process in
Internet retail banking supportive and adaptive to the banking needs of the
customers of the bank. The following posts are available.

RESEARCH OFFICER/ASSISTANT (1 post)

RESEARCH FELLOW OFFICER
Ref: J00/054/A

The post is available for eight months full-time or 16 months on a part-time
basis.

For all four posts the post-holder will be responsible for carrying
our research in the area of data and web mining. The work will involve
the design and implementation of new data mining algorithms and the
application of extant knowledge discovering algorithms.

Applicants must have a degree or higher degree in computing
science or similar discipline and research or equivalent industrial experience
using C/C++ of Java Experience in e-commerce in general or the application of
e-commerce in banking is desirable.

For appointment at Research Officer level applicants must have two
years' research or equivalent industrial experience using C/C++ or Java.

For appointment a Research Fellow Level applicants must have four
years research of equivalent industrial experience using C/C++ or Java.

NetMODEL

NetMODEL is funded by the UK's EPRSC research council and will look at
ways to let browsers of the Internet benefit from software that
'learns' their preferences and offers shortcuts or suggestions to make
their surg on the Information superhighway more enjoyable and
productive. The objective of NetMODEL is to research new techniques
for personalisation and recommendation systems utilising XML, PMML and
RDF. The project will be carried out in conjunction with the Internet
Business (TIBUS), Northern Ireland's leading Internet services, based
in Holywood and in Dublin

RESEARCH OFFICER
Ref: J00/055/A

Applications are invited for the post of Research Officer, the post is
available immediately and is tenable for 12 months in the first
instance. The post holder will be responsible for carrying out
research and development in the area of XML and Web Server based
technology. The work will involve the design and implementation of
tools to facilitate personalisation using the output data of mining
technologies.

Applicants must have a degree or higher degree in Computing Science or
similar discipline and have two years experience in web server
technology (Apache, ISS or Netscape); and C/C++ or PERL/CGI or ASP
Programming for web servers.
