With an ever-increasing number of users, access sites and a range of
electronic business activities, the Internet is witnessing a rapid growth
of online data. There has arisen consequently the challenge of utilizing
this wealth of data for improved business intelligence, better decision
making, enhanced customer relations, better design of services and product
offerings, etc. Individuals, too, in a digital networked society, have to
contend with far greater information than one can analyze, understand or
absorb. Adequate means for access, filtering and retrieval of web-based
information, use of intelligent agents, and knowledge discovery and data
mining processes are crucial for effective use of web resources and
opportunities.

Data mining has emerged in recent years as an interdisciplinary field of
study that includes machine learning, statistics, databases, optimization,
data visualization, high performance computing, management information
systems and knowledge based systems. This special issue of Decision Support
Systems seeks high quality research papers related to the general theme of
utilizing web based data. Papers may be rooted in any related discipline,
and topics of interest include (but are not restricted to):

Warehousing web data
Web data capture and preparation
Querying web data, analytical processing
Intelligent retrieval and filtering
User profiling, web personalization
Analyzing web usage data
Intelligent assistants and information agents
Web based market research
Direct marketing
Structuring and managing the data mining process

The submission deadline for articles is July 31st , 2000.
Authors are, however, encouraged to submit papers earlier. All papers will
be peer reviewed. Four copies of papers should be submitted to either:
