Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 14:43:51 +0100 Gregory, I feel that a figure of $1.56 billion greatly overstates the market. Defining the KDD market as technologies that "accommodate data mining" is very loose and can include a range of software products that do not do data mining but which support the process. A number of market forecasts have been wildly inaccurate. Most estimates I see for the sales of *packaged* data mining software are around $250 million. A good rule of thumb is that the five largest software vendors in an applications-focused market have one-third of the market. Very best wishes, Duncan Chapple.
