Research Scientist/Knowledge Discovery Engineer

CSCS operates one of the most advanced high-performance computing infrastructures in Europe, offering leading-edge IT expertise and support to universities, research institutions and industries.

The position is within the Information Processing Group, a young and growing R&D unit focusing on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining in large scientific databases.

The duties of the successful applicant include:

  • The implementation of leading-edge KDD solutions within national and international R&D projects.
  • The development of expertise about proprietary and commercial KDD application packages.
  • The continuous monitoring and assessment of state-of-the-art KDD technology.
  • The collaboration with world-class researchers in the development of data-intensive applications.

The required skills are:

  • A strong background in database technologies and in Artificial Intelligence, with the main focus being on machine learning, pattern recognition, classification techniques, feature extraction and predictive modeling.
  • A proven expertise in software development under Unix and PC platforms.
  • A good working knowledge of C, C++ and Java.

Knowledge of commercial and/or public domain Data Mining application packages would be an additional asset.

Applicants should have an advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in computer science, informatics, applied mathematics or statistics, and at least 2 years of expertise in KDD-related topics matured within academia and/or industry.

Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills, the proven ability to work both in a team and independently, and a genuine commitment to the group objectives. Fluency in written and spoken English is necessary. Knowledge of Italian, German or French would be an additional asset.

This appointment at CSCS, part of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zürich), will initially be for three years with the possibility of a three year extension based on performance. The position does not involve regular teaching duties.
