International Journal of Image and Graphics (IJIG)
Special Issue on Graphical Methods in Data Mining
==========================================================

GUEST EDITORS:
Abraham Kandel (University of South Florida, USA)
Horst Bunke (University of Bern, Switzerland)
Mark Last (Ben-Gurion University, Israel)

SCHEDULE
---------------
Submission deadline of the completed paper: 16 July 2001
Notification of decisions: 15 September 2001
Final papers: 15 October 2001

BACKGROUND
---------------------
Traditional data mining methods include a variety of techniques for
extracting quantitative patterns from large amounts of numeric and
textual data. However, the raw data is often obtained in a graphical
form as a 3-D image, a multimedia object, etc. In addition, the
interpretability of the quantitative data mining results falls short of
the visualization approach, where the human perception can identify
patterns and anomalies in a fast and efficient way. Thus, graphical
methods present a promising approach to such important challenges of
data mining and knowledge discovery as improving understandability of
discovered patterns, mining complex data types, interactive knowledge
discovery, web mining, and others.

The aim of this special issue is to present recent advances in the
applications of graphical methods to data mining. Submitted
papers should describe novel methodologies, detailed results of
real-world data mining studies, or extensive comparison of existing
methods and tools. In particular, we encourage submissions that discuss
integration of graphical methods with well-established data mining
techniques (e.g., decision trees or neural networks).

Topics addressed by this issue include, but are not limited to:

 Data visualization
Visualization of the knowledge discovery process
Graphical user interfaces (GUI) for data mining
 Automated perceptions of visualized data
 Data generalization and aggregation
 Data cleaning
 Outliers detection and analysis
 Temporal and spatial data mining
 Multimedia data mining
 Visual cluster analysis
 Web mining
 Visualization of data mining results
