Subject: SIGKDD Elections: Please vote!

If you are a member of ACM SIGKDD (if not -- please join), you should have received the first-ever SIGKDD election ballot last week.

ACM SIGKDD is the leading professional association for data mining researchers and practitioners, created in 1999 to run the KDD Annual Conference and foster progress in the field. SIGKDD also publishes an excellent SIGKDD Explorations Magazine and represents data miners in various professional activities.

The paper ballots contain the position statements of the candidates.

The candidates for SIGKDD chair are:

  • Eui-Kyeong Hong (U. of Seoul, Korea)
  • Won Kim (CyberDB), current provisional Chair
I support Won Kim who did a great job of steering SIGKDD in the last 2 years and urge you to vote for him.

The candidates for Secretary/Treasurer are:

  • John Z. Lin (Epsilon)
  • Rakesh Agrawal (IBM), current provisional Secretary/Treasurer
I strongly support Rakesh Agrawal, who serves not only as a Treasurer but also facilitates links to database research community.

For the Board of Directors, there are 6 candidates for 5 positions

(listed on the ballot in this randomly selected order)
  • Jiawei Han (Simon Fraser U., Canada)
  • Daryl Pregibon (AT&T), current provisional Director
  • Christos Faloutsos (CMU), current provisional Director
  • Usama Fayyad (digiMine), current provisional Director
  • Ramasamy Uthurusamy (GM), current provisional Director
  • Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro (KDnuggets & Xchange), current provisional Director
I ask for your vote and promise to keep working for advancing the field and especially promoting standards initiatives, including CRISP-DM and PMML.

The other 5 candidates for the Board of Directors are all well-known and accomplished leaders of the field. All are worthy of your support, so please read their position statements and make the difficult choice of 5 out of 6.

Please mark your vote, return the ballot in ACM-provided envelope, SIGN the envelope, and mail it back to ACM so that it is received by June 19.
