Dr. Won Kim. the current SIGKDD Chair (www.acm.org/sigkdd), has been selected as the recipient of the 2001 ACM Distinguished Service Award.

The citation reads:

For distinguished and significant service to the computer science community and ACM by initiating a Special Interest Group (SIGKDD), developing an ACM Transaction (on Internet Technology), chairing several Special Interest Groups (SIGMOD, SIGKDD) and serving as Editor-in-Chief of several ACM and IEEE publications.

The Awards Banquet will be held on April 27, 2002, at the University of Toronto's Hart House.

I have been privileged to work with Won on creating SIGKDD and on several KDD conferences, and was impressed by his tireless energy, technical knowledge of the field, and understanding how to run complex organizations and remain in the black.
