Subject: ICDM-02 Workshop on Data Cleaning and Preprocessing, deadline Oct 1

Held in conjunction with ICDM 2002

Workshop Description

Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDD) research has resulted in much success in the last decade. However, the research on Data Cleaning and Preprocessing has lagged behind. There is now a growing group of researchers who are addressing this issue from different angles. For data mining to continue to enjoy its success in real world applications, it is critical to have a good understanding of data preprocessing, especially for important applications such as market surveillance and customer relationship management. We believe that the issue of data cleaning and preprocessing might become the next hot point of research in KDD community. We would like to initiate this workshop to bring people together to discuss what have been done so far in this area, what could be done in the short term as well as long term in the future, and how we might cooperate to push this research area into the front line of KDD research.

Topics

This workshop aims to provide a forum for sharing valuable experience among researchers from different communities. We invite original contributions related to data cleaning and data preprocessing. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Quality data collecting Data analysis Instance selection and data sampling Data preparation Data preprocessing Data filtering Data merging or purging Data cleaning Data cleaning and data mining Data cleaning and machine learning Data cleaning and Wed mining Data cleaning and data warehousing Treatment of missing values and incorrect values Feature selection Data transformation Data cleaning for temporal and spatial data Automatic and Interactive methods for data cleaning and preprocessing

Paper Submission

Papers must be written in English and be no more than 12 pages. Send a copy of your paper (in Postscript, or PDF format) to either of the program co-chairs by email based on the "important dates". At this stage of paper submission, we will not impose any specific paper format/style.

Proceedings

Workshop proceedings will be available in the workshop. Selected papers will be published in the special issue of Applied Artificial Intelligence: an international journal. Selected papers using the style available at

http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/t-authors/aaiauth.html

are recommended. All papers selected should be sent electronically (preferably in PDF or PS) to Dr. Shichao Zhang.
