Subject: Student Data Mining Cup 2003: task to identify spam e-mail

Chemnitz / March 3, 2003 - Only a few weeks until start of 4th DATA MINING CUP.

This year, the prudsys AG and the Chemnitz University of Technology again have worked out a task with a high relation to practice: Each day, more than 25 Millions of undesired e-mails - so-called spam mails - are sent. This corresponds to one tenth of all sent e-mails worldwide. The task specification of the contest to the DATA MINING CUP 2003 is to identify spam files by means of Data Mining (i.e. intelligent data analysis).

From March 1, 2003, interested students can register online under http://www.data-mining-cup.com for taking part in the contest. On April 15, 2003, the contest starts with handing out the task. By May 14, 2003, the participants then can hand in their solutions. The best participants will get attractive prizes such as a trip to the International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) at the end of August in Washington/USA as well as attractive hardware and software packages.

The prizes will be presented during the DMC User Event Days that will take place on June 18-20, 2003 in Chemnitz. Moreover, this three-day event will offer the conference visitor an insight into practice-relevant knowledge in application-oriented area of Data Mining and Customer Relationship Management, in the form of lectures, presentations, exhibits and job talks. The exchange of experiences and views among practicians, scientists, providers/suppliers and students will be promoted. News, trends as well as concrete application areas in these fields will be presented in detail an discussed.
