Subject: Honorary Awards: Let's get more data mining community members acknowledged

I would like to encourage you to nominate worthy members of the IDM/data mining community at large (i.e., not necessarily IDM PIs only, but also researchers from industry, etc.) for the National Science Board (NSB) Honorary Awards (http://www.nsf.gov/nsb/awards/start.htm):

National Medal of Science
Awarded to individuals "deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or social and behavioral sciences."

Alan T. Waterman Award
This annual award recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering supported by the National Science Foundation.

Vannevar Bush Award
This annual award recognizes an individual who, through public service activities in science and technology, has made an outstanding "contribution toward the welfare of mankind and the nation."

National Science Board Public Service Award This annual award recognizes people and organizations who have increased the public understanding of science or engineering.

Please note that NO members of the IDM/data mining community received any of these Honorary Awards. However, I firmly believe that the IDM community includes stellar researchers as well as dedicated scientists who provided great service to research and education. Given that the IDM community is the pillar of the "Information Age", I believe the researchers who helped us to get here should be recognized (especially since one of the awards is named after Vannevar Bush, the father of MEMEX.).

As you can see, "Computer/Information Science" is not included as one of the areas for the National Medal of Science, but this only more I hope you will take a look at the descriptions and past recipients of the NSB Honorary Awards, and will nominate strong candidates for these awards.

All nominations/references must be submitted through the honorary awards Fastlane site -- www.fastlane.nsf.gov/honawards.
