Discovery Informatics, College of Charleston

A new undergraduate program in knowledge discovery has been developed by the faculty at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina. The Bachelor of Science program, named Discovery Informatics began in the fall semester of 2005 with enrollments that have already exceeded expectations. The rigorous 77 semester-credit-hour program is designed for academically talented students who can succeed in the theory and application of knowledge discovery within one of ten cognate disciplines offered for undergraduate research.

The program is unique in abstracting the principles, methodologies and foundational theory from the application area (cognate) within the liberal arts and sciences as well as its inclusion of dynamic inference from data streams. The program also offers a minor in Discovery Informatics is also available to all students at the College who want to add a quantitative and computational component to their majors, which are increasingly data-rich.
