The Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science (RIACS), located in Silicon Valley, performs computer science research in collaboration with NASA and university scientists to solve challenging scientific problems in support of NASA's goals and missions. RIACS is an institute of the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), a non-profit organization. More information on the RIACS program of research may be found under the "Research" menu tab.

RIACS has an opening for an experienced Senior Scientist. Responsibilities of this position include research and development of advanced methods to enable fast and reliable prognostics regarding the health of complex aerospace systems. The candidate must be comfortable developing and prototyping new data-driven and model based prognostics systems as well as have a good research background. Emphasis on control engineering or system engineering is desired along with good communication skills. Previous experience in Department of Defense systems is also desired.

The successful candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Research and development of prognostic algorithms for various aerospace platforms.
  • Develop methods to estimate the useful remaining life of complex systems.
  • Quantification of uncertainty in prognostic algorithms.
  • Write compelling research and development proposals for NASA and other funding sources.
  • Mathematical programming in Matlab/C/C++ and or Java.
  • A Ph.D., or a Master's degree and five years experience in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Development, results oriented individual with a research background.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior scientific and management personnel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • US Citizenship required
Suggested areas of knowledge and expertise:

  • Machine learning, data mining, data visualization
  • System and/or control engineering
  • Programming skills
  • Bayesian Inference
