Description

The Information Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a creative and visionary leader with demonstrated integrity, enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility, and confidence to act as Chief Scientist for Knowledge Sciences. The Chief Scientist will develop the strategy for Knowledge Sciences within the Computational and Information Sciences Directorate, establish and guide new research directions, lead research and development proposals, develop new technologies and capabilities, and interact with key clients. The successful candidate for this position will lead projects and proposals at the forefront of our developing base in Knowledge Sciences.

Minimum Requirements**
Level V: Ph.D. with 5 years experience is required. Must have a national or international authority and be applying intensive and diversified knowledge of scientific or engineering principles in broad areas of assignments and related fields.

Level VI: Ph.D. with 7 years experience and distinguished personal achievements are required. International reputation publication list in field of expertise. Must have a widely recognized national and international authority.

Both levels: Technical contributions must be recognized as having a substantial impact on advancing the current state of knowledge and understanding in scientific or technical disciplines. An extensive publication record is required, as is a demonstrated track record of successful proposals. The ability to represent the Laboratory at national and international events is expected. Candidates must be able to obtain a DOE "Q" security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship.

** Placement level is dependent upon management's assessment of the selected candidate's skills, experience, and ability to contribute.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in computer science, computational sciences, mathematics or related field and at least eight years experience beyond the PhD and post-doctoral level with an established research career and reputation in computer science, computational science or mathematics.

Candidates must show an impressive track record in devising innovative scientific solutions with broad experience in advanced knowledge extraction, representation, and exploitation techniques along with advanced knowledge in management technologies to create state of the art information and knowledge systems. The candidate must have experience in technical team building for software research and development. S/he will develop and carry out an advanced research and development program in technology and systems for next generation computing environments. S/he must have demonstrated leadership, networking, organizational, negotiating, communications, and mentoring skills coupled with the desire and ability to interact with clients, prepare research proposals, and help generate future research directions.
