Subject: Mount Olive or Hackettstown, NJ: Analytic Research Scientist at Mars Inc

Purpose: The Catalyst Research Group is a central research group / think tank for Mars Incorporated. Catalyst develops and brings in unique analytic methods and technologies that are not available elsewhere within Mars Inc. As we are faced with larger and more complex data sets, leading edge analytics and data mining modeling is crucial for gaining competitive advantage in business decision making. Challenges, opportunities and issues whose solution provides a strategic, high-impact sustainable edge for Mars are the primary focus of this position.

As the benefits of the tools we develop become clearer, the job holder is accountable for transfering the work to the business. Because the sciences and technologies that Catalyst develops are often unique, ready to use IT solutions do not exist and the job holder needs to be able to develop both hardware and software solutions. To come up with results that are implementable within a research environment and then to lead the development of enterprise level robust solutions and ensure that they are transferred into the business.

Key Results:

  • Apply analytical skills as well as the appropriate tools to develop original solutions to unsolved business problems.
  • Transfer and implement relevant research from academia and the private sector into applied business solutions.
  • Actively facilitate a high level of analytical capabilities in the group.
  • Operate as an expert Research Scientist within Catalyst. Job holder is required to participate in Project teams where specialist knowledge and expertise is needed.
  • Interact with members of the research group and business units to translate solutions from research into actionable recommendations that can be implemented in the business units.
  • Develop and bring in new technologies and methods with the potential to develop a competitive edge in analytics.
  • Innovate scientifically and academically to keep the group at the cutting edge of solving seemingly intractable business challenges.
Required Skills:
  • Highly motivated, self directed and curious are the primary characteristics sought for this position.
  • Data mining, high speed algorithm development, statistical modeling, machine learning
  • STRONG programming skills
  • The construction and manipulation of large SQL databases.
  • Ability to operate within research projects where the striving for uniqueness and absence of ready made solutions results in a high degree of complexity, ambiguity, uncertainty and risk.
  • ** Project Management Consulting and Stakeholder Management Skills.

PhD in:
  • Machine learning / AI

  • Bioinformatics

  • Other hard-science, quantitative field
Languages: English Fluency necessary. Additional languages a plus.

Travel: Some domestic and international travel required.
