Academic/Research Positions

From: Bijan Raahemi
Date: 05 Nov 2007
Subject: Post-Doc Fellowship in Machine Learning and Data Mining at U. Ottawa

The Knowledge Discovery and Data mining (KDD) Laboratory at University of Ottawa, Canada, invites applications for a post doctoral fellowship to conduct research in the areas of stream data mining and machine learning with applications in telecommunications, and in particular, mining frequent patterns in IP traffic to classify peer-to-peer traffic in service providers' networks. Data mining algorithms, and in particular classification and clustering algorithms need to be modified to efficiently adopt to the task of mining live stream of data. The online data mining techniques developed in this research have wide range of applications beyond detecting P2P traffic including application signature detection, intrusion detection and email spam detection.

The focal points of the projects in the KDD lab are study and development of advanced algorithms in stream data mining, distributed data mining, privacy preserving data mining, as well as emerging applications of data mining in the areas of engineering (network security, intrusion detection) and business (fraud detection, risk analysis, business intelligence).

Qualified candidate must have a Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field, with strong communications skills in English. Scientific creativity, strong initiative, and a thorough knowledge of machine learning and data mining techniques for stream data are essential, as is the demonstrated ability to implement these algorithms in software.
