Here's how it works:

Inference functions as a Microsoft Office add-in that has a point-and-click interface for adding code, objects, and structured data to Word and Excel documents. With a single click, the Word or Excel document can be automatically transformed into a results document, making reporting a cinch. And Inference utilizes all of the Microsoft Office document productivity features that are essential for editing, formatting, and collaboration.

Inference also contains an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for R called Inference Studio. Inference Studio allows users to manage R packages, create and edit new R source files, query R object files, run R code line-by-line, and manage Excel datasets, while providing advanced debugging features including breakpoints, edit-and-continue, and a direct line with R's own Help system. As the most advanced R editor available, Inference Studio can be used for your entire project, from start to finish. Furthermore, all of your data, code, and R files are stored in a single Inference Studio document, making it significantly easier to manage your project. Inference Studio is integrated directly with the Inference Office add-ins and also functions as a standalone program that you can use without having Office installed.

While Inference provides R users with a user-friendly interface, integrated development environment, and powerful reporting tool, it can also be used to create and deploy situational applications (called "tailored solutions") for solving complex data analysis problems. For example, a solution might consist of an Excel table in the form of a data frame, code to plot data from the Excel table, and instructions for adding data to the Excel table. With Inference, such a solution can be deployed to end-users as a Microsoft Office document with instructions, and then executed within minutes by users who have limited knowledge of R.
