Job: Ph.D. project "Machine learning for planning" ,
Eindhoven/Tilburg, The Netherlands

VACANCY: Ph.D. Position
Automatic inductive learning techniques for planning systems

Project description

To optimise the efficiency of planning systems it is necessary to have a good estimate of the duration or costs of the planned tasks. For some tasks, duration and costs are given; for others these factors are uncertain. In the latter case the planning system should be equipped with a model by which duration and costs can be estimated. For example, a hospitalisation planning system, used to support the admission and allocation of patients in a general hospital, contains a component to estimate for each new patient the number of days of treatment and recovery, usage of operating room, x-ray photos, etc. Developing such models is supported traditionally by using mathematical models, statistical techniques and expert systems.

The project target is, apart from a Ph.D. thesis, to formulate recommendations for the application of inductive learning techniques in planning systems in general, and to develop a concrete estimation model, induced automatically for a realistic capacity planning problem.

The project research is based at Eindhoven Technical University, at the Faculty of Technology Management's department of Information and Technology. The research will be done in close cooperation with the Induction of Linguistic Knowledge (ILK) research group at the Faculty of Arts of Tilburg University. Project managers are dr. A. Weijters (Eindhoven University of Technology) and dr. Walter Daelemans (Tilburg University).

You have a background in business administration / computer science or a related direction with a sound mathematical component, and you are interested in the application of computer-science methods to real-world problems. Programming experience and knowledge of statistical methods is an advantage.

Offer

We offer a four-year position. In the first year, salary is 2,834 Dutch guilders, increasing each year to 3,841 Dutch guilders in the fourth year.
