Subject: Interactive Week: Problems Surface With Data Mining
Web: http://www.zdnet.com/intweek/stories/news/0,4164,388207,00.html

Charles Babcock writes in Interactive Week (Feb 2, 1999) about
privacy problems surfacing as Internet service providers, begin to
mine their access log.

Jon Irwin, VP at EarthLink Network (www.earthlink.net), says mining his
customers' data has been helpful in determining whether customers are
getting the telecom service they need, e.g. connecting on the first try?

Others say that capturing the customer click stream information is of
fantastic value and can verify how and whether advertising works.

However, MindSpring Enterprises (www.mindspring.com), will not be analyzing
clickstream -- and customers seem to like that.

For full text of the article and discussion of the dilema -- to mine or not
to mine -- see http://www.zdnet.com/intweek/stories/news/0,4164,388207,00.html
