The discovery of features and patterns embedded within data provide extremely important information to industries regarding their application domains. Utilization of these hidden knowledge helps industry to remain on the competitive edge. This special issue will be devoted to the discovery of knowledge from both structured and unstructured data. Currently, structured data in the form of relational databases has received the most attention. Recently, research in the mining of unstructured data (text, audio and video) has gained momentum. Original papers are solicited on the following aspects (not excluding other related knowledge discovery topics) of mining structured and unstructured data: 1. New knowledge discovery techniques for both structured and unstructured data 2. Refinement and comparison studies of existing techniques 3. Managing extremely large data sets 4. Visualization techniques for knowledge discovery 5. Real-time translation of audio data into text 6. Techniques to enforce structure on unstructured data Send electronic submissions in postscript or pdf to the guest editor using the e-mail address engel@driesie.cs.up.ac.za. Postal submissions (4 copies) should be send to Dr AP Engelbrecht, Department of Computer Science, School of Information Technology, University of Pretoria, Pretoria, 0002, South Africa. The following deadlines are applicable: Submission of papers: 15 September 2000 Notification of acceptance: 1 November 2000 Submission of final paper: 14 November 2000 Publication of special issue: December 2000 Accepted papers must be prepared according to the guidelines of the journal.
