Knowledge discovery for decision makers: Data Mining,
Text Mining and Web Data Mining

Megaputer Intelligence (www.megaputer.com) and SAIC (www.saic.com) seminar

Dates:
June 13-14, 2000 - Indianapolis, IN

Location:
8720 Castle Creek Parkway, #300
Indianapolis, IN 46250

Outline:

Data Mining is quickly winning hearts and souls of corporate decision
makers. Good old days when manual information analysis was deemed
possible and sufficient are history. Huge volumes of information -
gigabytes and terabytes - require their analysis in order to make
informed decisions. That is why increasingly more companies recourse
to data mining, where automated machine learning algorithms help
processing large amounts of historical data, discovering hidden
patterns and relationships, and predicting outcomes of future
situations. Today data mining is powerful, yet immature
technology. There are many burning open questions left, which we
attempt addressing in the new course. For example:

Q. How to integrate data mining tools with an RDBMS?

A. The latest technology for simple integration of data mining
technology with external applications is the new SQL-based protocol,
OLE DB for Data Mining. PolyAnalyst is the first data mining system on
the market implementing the support for this new protocol. We present
foundations of OLE DB for Data Mining and demonstrate with hands-on
examples the convenience and power of the new protocol.

Q. How to capture and utilize to the fullest extent web site visitor
information in order to increase the value of each visitor in
e-Business?

A. By e-Business we understand e-Commerce, e-Marketing, e-CRM,
etc. E-Business will benefit tremendously from incorporating data
mining techniques in the cycle. Here we outline this new competitive
advantage and set goals of web data mining. Then we discuss how and
which data to capture and analyze, and how to integrate the results in
a customer relationship management e-system. First steps in developing
data mining tools for E-business tasks are being made by different
vendors. We outline existing strategies and shortcomings.

Q. How to discover knowledge contained in texts and other
unstructured data forms?

A. Articles, e-mails, web pages, and memorandums all contain important
information that we would like to distill, store, and use for making
informed decisions. Techniques for analyzing texts differ
significantly from those designed for analyzing relational
databases. Here we discuss different existing approaches to
intelligent text processing and present capabilities and foundations
of an innovative text mining tool TextAnalyst.

At the seminar you will learn answers to these and many other
important questions. We will teach you the best practices in applying
a data mining system PolyAnalyst and a text mining system TextAnalyst
to real world tasks. We will outline our vision of the coming
transformation of knowledge discovery into a mass market technology
operating behind the scenes to optimize many business tasks,
especially in the world of e-Commerce and e-Marketing. Finally, we
will be happy to answer your questions and discuss your project after
the seminar, aiming to provide you with hints and guidance best suited
for your data analysis project.

Instructor:

Sergei Ananyan, Ph.D., has over seven years of experience in applying
various data mining techniques to real world data analysis tasks, as
well as guiding the design of advanced data mining applications. He is
an author of numerous academic papers and magazine articles discussing
various aspects of data and text mining.
