Subject: Rockville, MD: KDD Positions at NASD
The Knowledge Discovery in Databases Group of the National Association of
Securities Dealers (NASD) Regulation, Inc. (NASD Regulation, Inc.) is
looking to hire an additional KDD specialist to join our team of seven
experienced KDD staff.

NASD Regulation is the subsidiary of the NASD responsible for regulating
the Nasdaq Stock Market as well as all US securities firms (i.e.,
broker/dealers). We conduct analyses of financial market and member firm
data resulting in knowledge which is used to implement detection patterns
in our regulatory information systems and to make decisions regarding
rules and policies for securities market regulation. We receive several
types of transactions totaling over 30 million each day, all of which must
be exhaustively and equitably surveilled not only for distinct instances
of multiple types of complex potential violations but also for potential
patterns or practices of violative behavior. We are also responsible for
identifying previously unknown types of potentially violative behavior.
Our databases are several Terabytes in size and growing rapidly. We apply
leading technologies, methods, tools, and techniques to accomplish our
goal of improving the effectiveness of our regulatory programs to
continually enhance our position as the world's leading regulator of
capital markets.

The KDD team works in close collaboration with both our regulatory
analysts and our information system developers. Techniques we employ
include exploratory data analysis, sequence detection, sequence discovery,
rule matching, rule discovery, clustering, time series analyses, text
mining, multiple regression, and visualization. We experiment with and
define needed data requirements, transformations, clean-up, matching, and
other data preparation operations. We conduct special analyses of key
regulatory issues. We continually improve our KDD processes and
procedures as appropriate for our highly dynamic environment.

We seek candidates who are capable of independent contributions but also
enjoy and will contribute to a highly collaborative team. We require
experience with both data analysis and programming, and prefer candidates
with an interest in or experience with financial data. Candidates may
possess a variety of educational and experience backgrounds, from purely
technical to financial and business. At present, we are especially
interested in candidates with strong backgrounds in statistics (especially
techniques for time series analysis), financial modeling of capital
markets, and/or regulatory/risk analyses. Experience with relational
databases (especially Oracle) and SAS software is also highly desirable.
We are also interested in candidates experienced in text mining and
natural language processing techniques. You must also have good
communication skills with both technical and non-technical colleagues.

We are currently seeking junior members of our team to work with our
experienced and accomplished staff and who would like to grow with the
team. You will have the opportunity to make immediate and valuable
contributions as we design and develop our next generation of regulatory
systems. You will also have the opportunity to learn about various
segments of the capital markets, including equities, options, derivatives,
and fixed-income, and about all types of participants in the broker/dealer
industry.

Work is performed in our Rockville, MD facility outside Washington, DC.
We offer a competitive compensation and flexible benefits package. NASD
Regulation is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and is
committed to diversity in our workforce. NASD is also a drug-free and
smoke-free workplace. Eligibility to work in the US is required.

If you are interested, please contact Ted Senator at senatort@nasd.com or
fax your resume to 301-212-2288.
