A forum for practical problem presentation and prospective solutions
Associated with PKDD-2000 12 September 2000
MotivationThe objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for interchange of ideas between researchers in the areas of Data Mining and Machine Learning and representatives of companies involved in applying the existing technologies in resolution of real problems. The workshop will thus consist of two types of presentations. Some will be presented by researchers active in the areas of Data Mining, Decision Support, Machine Learning, Meta-Learning and Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) describing their experience in applying the methodologies to problems of commercial, industrial and social interest. The others will be done by representatives of companies describing not only their sucess stories, but also concerns about the direction the research should follow. Currently there exist various European projects in this area, involving both acadamic partners and industrial partners. Among these are Esprit Projects METAL, Sol-Eu-Net and Network ILPNet2. At the cutting-edge of modern techniques are the techniques based on meta-learning and Inductive Logic Programming (ILP), investigated in METAL and ILPNet2. So another objective of the workshop is to provide a meeting place for partners of related cluster of projects, enabling to disseminate early some of its results and establish new contacts with the community at large.
