Located in Moss Landing, California, MBARI's research center includes science and engineering laboratories, as well as an operations facility to support our two research vessels and two remotely operated vehicles. MBARI is pioneering the development of ocean observatory systems, as well as creating a range of novel instrumentation for extended ocean observation. In tandem with these activities, data management systems and protocols at the Institution are expected to grow in both scope and complexity. IAG is responsible for archiving and making accessible scientific data for both MBARI staff, as well as the larger oceanographic community. This group's mission includes the development of sophisticated data handling and management systems for MBARI's multi-sensor oceanographic observing platforms, for maintaining existing data management infrastructure, and for developing new applications in support of individual scientists. The successful candidate will supervise a team of software engineers and software application developers on science-oriented data management projects. Minimum Bachelor's degree in a physical science, computer science, or software engineering required. Minimum ten years software engineering and managerial experience, preferably in the area of scientific data management required. Ph.D. or equivalent postgraduate work in the physical sciences or scientific data management preferred. Demonstrated broad experience in software and database design for scientific applications required. Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills required. Must be able to work with diverse groups of people within MBARI and in collaborating institutions. Demonstrated supervisory skills, and experience with long term, large scale, multi-institutional projects required. Should be willing and able to work at sea when required.
