PublicationsFrom: Prof. F. Murtagh F.Murtagh@Queens-Belfast.ac.ukDate: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 20:41:01 +0100 (BST) Subject: Mining telecom (cellphone) tariff data Making sense of telephone tariffs from mobile and fixed phone serviceproviders is incredibly difficult. This is even more so the case in Europe, where one easily travels from one country to another, and so from one set of service providers to another. The first ever study of the "near impenetrable jungle" of mobile phone calling costs in Ireland, taking in Northern Ireland (UK prices) and the Republic of Ireland, plus details of the first on-line system for making mobile phone prices transparent to the public, are contained in a new report published by the Centre for Cross Border Studies with sponsorship from Irish cellphone operator, Eircom. The report - "The Evolution of Telecom Technologies: Current Trends and Near-Future Implications" - has been compiled by a research team led by Professor Fionn Murtagh of Queen's University Belfast and Dr John Keating of National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Further information: Interactive calculator for mobile phone charges, in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland, including roaming charges: http://www.b4ucall.com A full copy of the report is available online (under "News") at the Centre for Cross-Border Studies, Armagh, http://www.qub.ac.uk/ccbs Further papers describing the online interative cellphone tariffs calculator are in progress. We hope to extend this work to other countries and service providers. Fionn Murtagh, f.murtagh@qub.ac.uk John Keating, j.keating@may.ie |
