For the first time, the number of U.S. homes with access to the Internet
declined -- by 0.3 percent, to 68.5 million connected households, mainly
because of 20% decline in free ISP subscribers. Free access is no longer
provided by AltaVista, Kmart, and others.
The decline was partly offset by 18 percent growth in cable-modem subscribers
and 8 percent growth in paid dial-up subscribers.
