Subject: Java Data Mining (JSR-73) Specification Enters Community Review Period

Java Specification Request (JSR) 73: Java Data Mining (JDM) went to the Community Review period in the Java Community Process (JCP) on March 22, 2002. The Community Review draft document is available for comment for JCP members. The Public Review document is expected later this year.

Java Data Mining provides a framework for performing common data mining operations, while facilitating the introduction of new or non-standard mining algorithms. By separating algorithm details from function level specification, JDM strives to make data mining accessible to mining experts and novices. JDM focuses on mining functions including classification, regression, clustering, association rules, and attribute importance (a.k.a. feature selection).

JDM leverages and influences other data mining standards such as the Data Mining Group's Predictive Model Markup Language, Object Management Group's Common Warehouse Metadata for Data Mining, and the ISO SQL standard SQL/MM for Data Mining.

See http://www.jcp.org/jsr/detail/73.jsp for additional information on JSR-73.

See http://www.jcp.org/introduction/overview/index.en.jsp for an introduction to the Java Community Process and becoming a member.

JDM specification lead Mark Hornick introduced JDM at JavaOne 2002, San Francisco, last month. There is growing interest in data mining in the Java Community for introducing intelligence to Java-based applications and web services.

See http://servlet.java.sun.com/javaone/sf2002/conf/sessions/display-1442.en.jsp for details.
