Special Issue on Knowledge Discovery from Distributed Information Sources
Journal of Information Sciences http://www.csd.auth.gr/~lpis/kddis.html

Background

Recently, distributed knowledge discovery has attracted a lot of attention from the data mining community. Advances in network technology and the Internet as well as the growing size of data being stored in today's information systems have contributed to the proliferation of distributed database architectures. Moreover, the offices or departments of many organizations and companies are scattered across a country or across the world, and central storage of data is often inefficient. Globalization, business-to-business commerce and online collaboration between organizations rose lately the need for inter-organizational data mining. During the last few years substantial progress has been made towards the development of algorithms, architectures and systems for mining physically distributed information sources. However, there are issues that remain unresolved or unsatisfactory addressed. This special issue of Information Sciences is targeted at publishing original research on recent advances and open challenges in knowledge discovery from distributed information sources.

Topics

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
  • Inherently distributed data
  • Location and resource aware data mining
  • Heterogeneous data, distributions, models and networks
  • Semantics as part of the distribution
  • Reasoning about local models
  • Scalability of the distributed knowledge discovery process
  • Grid and mobile data mining
  • Distributed discovery of comprehensible models
  • Security and privacy issues in distributed data mining
  • Novel systems for distributed knowledge discovery
