Subject: Total Information Awareness: What do data miners think?

The previous KDnuggets Poll asked: Do you support DARPA "Total Information Awareness" program to link many databases and use data mining to look for threat patterns?

The results were
Yes, because it will find some threats -- 22%
No, because it will erode privacy -- 36%
Not sure - it may work, but it will erode privacy too much -- 29%
Don't know about it -- 13%

See the poll at www.kdnuggets.com/polls/2002/total_information_awareness.htm

Less than a quarter of the KDnuggets readers who voted supported TIA, echoing the sentiment in much of the media which is running against the program on the ground that it is a great erosion of privacy and is not likely to work well.

However, I was surprised that only 126 people voted. Was the poll question was too long or perhaps data miners do not care as much about privacy as people in the media?
