The increasing use of computer technology in many areas of economic, scientific and social life is resulting in collections of digital data. The amount of data which is created on and stored in these computer is growing from day to day. Electronic data base facilities are common everywhere and can be considered as standard technology. Beyond that arises the question what is the next higher quality that can be derived from these electronically data pools. The next logical step toward a higher quality would be the analysis of these data in order to derive useful in! formation that are not ad-hoc accessible for humans. Here comes Data Mining into play. By using data mining technology it is possible to automatically derive new knowledge, new concepts or knowledge structure from these digital data. It is a young discipline but with enormous knowledge growing.Whereas the first work was done on numerical data, multimedia applications brought forth the necessity to develop data mining methods that can work on all kinds of data such as documents, images, and signals.

The book is devoted to this request. It is written for students, expert from industry and medicine as well as for scientist who like to get into the field of mining multimedia data. We will describe the basic concept as well as various applications in order to inspire people to use Data Mining technology in practice wherever it is applicable. In the first part of the book, we introduce basic concepts. It deals with the question how information pieces can be extracted from images and s! ignals and the way they have to be represented in the system.In the second part of the book, we introduce basic concepts for data mining. It is done in a very fundamental way so that the reader gets a good understanding of these concepts.How these concepts work on real data will be shown in the third part of the book where real applications are discussed.
