Subject: Number of Statisticians and Data Miners ?

According to the 2002 US Census there are about 74,130 people that would fit into the statistician or data mining areas (SOC codes 15-2031 Operations Research Analysts and 15-2041 Statisticians). When I looked into the financial services SICs I found about 10,080 (or about 14%) with these titles. Obviously many of these are not data miners but this comes pretty close to the percentage estimate from your recent survey).

If the US has about 1/2 of the world's statisticians and dataminers, then there is probably around 150,000 worldwide.

Note from the Editor:

I estimate that about 1 in 10 US data miners attend KDD Conference, and about 50% of US data miners read KDnuggets. Since about 1,000 people attend KDD conference each year and the number of US KDnuggets News subscribers is about 6,500, then we get an estimate of US data miners about 10-15,000 data miners, and that probably represents about 50% of all data miners world-wide.
