IDC report: SAS is the leading vendor in data mining

Aug 8, 2004. SAS Institute reaffirmed its status as the number one player in data mining, capturing about 35 percent of the $500 million market for 2003, according to research firm IDC's annual report released this month.

In the IDC study, SAS is followed at 4.8 percent by Chicago-based SPSS, which also develops similar programs.

Dan Vesset, a research manager at Framingham, Mass.-based IDC, said the results were the same as last year when SAS led the group.

"That hasn't changed much," says Vesset, who estimates the data mining business will grow at about 6 percent annually over the next six years.

In the business intelligence market, which IDC estimates to be $4 billion annually, SAS comes in third, trailing Business Objects and Cognos.

Here is the rest of the story.
