I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to serve as editor-in-chief of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery. This journal has established an enviable reputation as the premier data mining journal. A research community benefits greatly from having a widely recognised high quality journal, and I am certain that I speak for all of us in thanking Usama Fayyad, Heikki Mannila and Raghu Ramakrishnan, the action editors and the editorial board for the outstanding service they have performed in establishing the journal and bringing it to its current state of eminence.

I intend to build upon the foundations they have laid, maintaining Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery as the leading venue for high quality research contributions in the areas of data mining and knowledge discovery.

Our discipline is fast changing, and it is important that research publications appear in print as rapidly as possible. To this end I have increased the number of action editors and set in place a number of policies and procedures to promote rapid reviewing and publication without compromising quality. Accepted papers will be published promptly in electronic form, avoiding the delay caused by the hardcopy publication process. The traditional hardcopy publication will also be maintained, providing authors with the best of both the electronic and hardcopy publication options. Authors also retain the right to place an electronic version on a personal home page.

Data mining practice is growing rapidly, with widespread application in the public sector, commerce, industry and science. Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery aims to remain the premier forum for scientific analysis of the algorithms, techniques and practices of this fast progressing area.
