Subject: SIGKDD Elections: New Chair, Treasurer, and Directors elected

The results for 2005 election for the new officers of the ACM SIGKDD (Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining) have come in from ACM.

I am pleased to report that Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro (that's me) will be the new chair, starting July 1, 2005.

The new Treasurer will be Usama Fayyad.

The new Directors will be

  • Jiawei Han
  • Raghu Ramakrishnan
  • Sunita Sarawagi
  • Robert Grossman
  • David Jensen
Congratulations to all elected!

Many thanks to the retiring SIGKDD Chair, Won Kim who guided SIGKDD to growth and put our annual conference on a solid fiscal footing for the past 7 years.

We will miss the sage advice and wisdom of retiring Treasurer Rakesh Agrawal, and retiring Directors Christos Faloutsos and Ramasamy Uthurusamy, and EC Advisor Daryl Pregibon, who participated in making SIGKDD a success from its founding in 1998.

As the new Chair, I look forward to more great ideas in data mining research, more successes of data mining applications, and more favorable perceptions of data mining in the press and the government, and hope to contribute to these developments.

Although only a small percentage of SIGKDD members vote, nevertheless this is the best democratic procedure we have. Here are the results:

Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro 115 (77.7%)
William DuMouchel 30 (20.3%)
Other 3 (2%)

For Secretary/Treasurer:
