We are continuing to expand the retail presence of our 40-year-old business into new markets and product lines.

We are currently building our research and predictive analytical capabilities in our Marketing area. We have an opportunity at the supervisory level for the right individual who can help build this functional area into a team of 2-3 persons. Must have prior supervisory experience.

SUMMARY:

As the Senior Data Mining Analyst, you will play a key role in identifying and solving key business problems associated with merchandising selection, pricing and target audience selection. Working with the Marketing and the Merchandising teams, you will apply research gleaned from academic and professional sources to effectively serve the needs and to support the business decisions made by these functional groups. You will report to the Marketing Manager and the VP-Marketing. You will build the analytics area into a vital functional team within the Marketing Department. You will enjoy the benefits of project diversity, working on new initiatives and identifying new opportunities to leverage data mining strategies to improve corporate profitability.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Apply background, knowledge and skills in data handling and data mining to serve critical business uses in Statistical Analysis and Predictive Modeling.
  • Work with the Marketing and Merchandising teams to identify modeling opportunities to solve business problems faced by both teams.
  • Develop and apply insightful data transformations and derivations to support downstream modeling initiatives.
  • Employ appropriate sampling and dimension reduction techniques to handle data volume and size.
  • Develop multiple models to address the business problem and validate the results. Use model selection techniques (Gains Charts) to identify the most appropriate model to deploy.
  • Communicate periodically with the business teams through the various stages of the projects.
  • Organize and present findings in an understandable way to the business teams.
  • Take a leadership role in building tools for less technical Marketing/Merchandising staffers to apply models/analytics in the production of marketing promotions.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring for other team members and play a key role in driving future direction and strategy for the Marketing and Merchandising teams.
REQUIREMENTS/WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Advanced degree in Marketing Science, Economics, Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematics with an emphasis on Statistical Modeling and/or Machine Learning is strongly preferred. A PhD is very desirable.
  • Knowledge and working experience in modeling techniques such as Bayesian, non-linear regression, neural networks, decision trees, segmentation/clustering algorithms, etc is required.
  • Deep understanding of statistical and inductive bias of modeling algorithms and experience with sampling to reduce data size is required.
  • Experience with statistical software (SPSS, SAS, Splus, etc) is required.
  • SQL skills are required and understanding of RDBMS is important.
  • Management skills and experience in an analytics environment is required.
  • Experience in retail marketing is desirable.
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills are required.
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven leadership ability is highly valued.
