Appointment consists of a nine-month academic year position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor depending on experience and qualifications. Departmental Information: The Computer Science Department has approximately 250 undergraduates and 50 graduate students. Its 12 faculty members offer Bachelor's (CAC/ABET-accredited), Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science. The department faculty is currently expanding and is looking to strengthen its research capability. The department prides itself on its high teaching standards and its research achievements. It attracts highly capable students and has had five Goldwater scholars and four USA Today Academic All Americans within the past ten years. The department has been designated a Key Department by Micron and Tektronix. The College of Engineering, to which the department belongs, has been recognized as one of the Hewlett Foundation's nine Engineering Schools of the West. The department enjoys strong ties with local industry. Partial funding for this position is being provided by RightNow Technologies. RightNow Technologies is a leading provider of next-generation Customer Relationship Management solutions to more than 1,800 companies around the world. RightNow is headquartered a short drive from MSU in Bozeman, MT. A significant portion of RightNow's workforce consists of MSU graduates. RightNow sponsors internship programs that employ between 5-10 students a semester. RightNow also operates joint colloquia with the MSU Computer Science department. Interdisciplinary collaboration is a strength of the Computer Science department and includes ongoing projects with the Center for Biofilm Engineering, the Center for Computational Biology, TechLink, the Western Transportation Institute, and the Idaho National Laboratory. Montana State University, with an enrollment of approximately 12,000, is located in Bozeman, a picturesque Rocky Mountain community of 40,000, situated 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. Bozeman is well served by four national airlines. Nearby outdoor recreation ranges from hiking and fishing in the summer, to cross-country and downhill skiing in the winter. Bozeman enjoys excellent schools and medical services comparable to those found in much larger communities. Bozeman offers a unique combination of culture, excellent restaurants, and small-town charm. Colorado College ranks the Gallatin Valley (home of Bozeman) as "the healthiest place to live in the Rocky Mountains." Further, this same report gave the area top scores in "livability, vibrancy, and vitality." Skiing Magazine identified Bozeman as the fourth top US skiing town in its September 2004 magazine. The MSU College of Engineering has established strategic goals related to increasing the participation of under-represented groups in the engineering profession. Women and ethnic minorities are particularly encouraged to apply Duties and Responsibilities: The ideal candidate will be an accomplished computing researcher who wishes to elevate their career to the next level while helping develop the MSU Computer Science department's research portfolio. The goal of the position is to attract a renowned researcher to energize the research activities of the Computer Science department. The successful applicant should be engaged in the practical aspects of Computer Science research to balance the current theoretical profile of the department and to lead the department on this complimentary path. This will provide an enhanced opportunity to work with industry and government and to engage the research community both on and off campus. The successful applicant will join the existing faculty in teaching primarily at the upper division and/or graduate level, and in developing and maintaining an active research program. Performance expectations include teaching and mentoring B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. students in the classroom and on research projects while conveying enthusiasm for the discipline of computing. All faculty members are required to be active in service to the department, university and the profession. There is an expectation that the successful applicant will help the department grow its graduate programs. Required Qualifications 1. An earned Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field. 2. Successful experience commensurate with a faculty appointment of advanced academic rank (associate professor or professor). 3. Demonstrated record of attracting competitive funding and research dissemination. 4. Demonstrated record of service and leadership within the profession. 5. Demonstrated success in mentoring PhD students or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications 1. Teaching and research expertise in the applied aspects of Computer Science such as, but not limited to: computer security, human-computer interaction, net-centric computing, computational science, parallel and distributed computing, software engineering, and/or computer organization. 2. Experience in building a research team and attracting external funding in a dynamic funding environment. 3. Experience in interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships. 4. The capability to further develop department graduate programs. The SuccessfulCandidate Will Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have a broad understanding of the field of Computer Science.
