Subject: San Francisco, CA, USA: Senior Developer/Machine Learning Expert at Academia.edu

Academia.edu looking for machine learning expert

www.Academia.edu is a Facebook-style site for academics, which has recently launched. It does two things:

  • Webpage creation. It enables academics who don't know HTML to create academic webpages, and add other academics on the site as their colleagues.
A sample webpage can be seen here: http://oxford.academia.edu/RichardPrice
  • Paper-tracker. We have built a paper-tracking engine (currently in beta) that tracks the latest papers uploaded to the web, narrowed down by topic.
Some initial results for Computer Science can be seen here: http://cs.academia.edu/categories/2/papers

The paper-tracker differs from paper search engines, such as Google Scholar, by providing notifications of the latest papers, narrowed down by topic, uploaded to the web in the last 24 hours.

More about us:

  • The founder, Richard Price, Ph.D, won the Prize Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford (awarded to two students at Oxford per year). He was recently made 2007 British Telecom entrepreneur of the year
  • Academia.edu is supported by leading academics around the world, and leading investors in the internet space
  • Some coverage of Academia.edu is here http://www.exetermcr.com/node/879 and here http://dormitem.com/blog/176

We are looking for someone to work with us to help us develop, and scale up, the paper-tracker. We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience in machine learning
  • Is keen to develop tools for that improve academics’ lives
  • Loves problem-solving
  • Learns super-quickly
  • Is enthusiastic about working in a startup with a large equity stake
Experience building a previous application is definitely a plus, though not essential. Experience extracting meta-data from documents is also a plus, but not essential.

We are based in San Francisco. We are offering a salary of $80,000, and options of between 4-5%. We have a small very strong team, and want to hire really brilliant people.
