Subject: Poll Results: Windows XP the dominant platform for DM

The previous KDnuggets Poll asked:

What operating systems / environments you use for your data mining / analytics work?

Windows XP emerged as the clear dominant system, with over 66% of respondents using it. Linux was in second place, with 34% of respondents, and MacOS in third place with 10%.

(note: multiple choices were allowed).

Compared to 2005 KDnuggets Poll: Operating systems for your data mining,

the OS with growing popularity were

  • Windows XP: increased from 59% to 66%
  • Windows Vista: from 0 to 4%
All other OS/environments declined in popularity.

The strongest drops were for

  • other (non-Linux) Unix: from 34% in 2005 to 15% in 2007, 55% drop
  • GNU Cygwin: from 12% to 3.5%, 70% drop
  • Windows 2000 and other non-XP: from 37% to 7%, 80% drop
