Subject: Can statistics be funny, on average?

A statistician is being prepped for surgery. He asks the surgeon who is going to perform the procedure, "What is the mortality rate of this operation?"

The surgeon says, with a confident smile on his face, "I guarantee you that you will survive this operation. 100% survival rate."

The statistician is delighted to hear this but doesn't completely believe what he hears.

"Yes, that is very good news. But what is the mortality rate?"

The surgeon says to him,

"Oh, the mortality rate is 90%. The first nine people died, and you are the tenth patient to receive this procedure. So don't worry."

(Editor note: if you laugh, you pass this test on statistics (:-)
