Blogs are Dead!?! -- Not Among Gen Y

A couple of weeks ago Wired magazine featured one of the "founding fathers of blogging", Jason Calacanis, who claimed blogs are dead. Reasons being, spam, as well as lack of interest among everyone except large corporate sites. Other reasons related to SEO, which had been a key reason for the attractiveness of blogs to spammers. Apparently in response to the blog spam issue Google is dialing down the importance of blogs in their ranking formula.

This years special focus is social media including blogs, and Social Network Services (SNS) including Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn.

Yahoo's automatic content optimization

Deepak Agarwal along with many others from Yahoo Research have a paper at the upcoming NIPS 2008 conference, "Online Models for Content Optimization", with a fun peek inside of a system at Yahoo that automatically tests and optimizes which content to show to their readers.

FeedVis: An Integrated Feed Visualization and Reading System

FeedVis provides several dimensions along which to explore and consume feeds: time (via a time series), tags (via a linearized tag cloud) and specific blogs (via a list). Selecting on any of these dimensions updates the display of the other 2. Finally, you can read posts that exist and the intersection of (the settings for) these dimensions.
