To what was a very basic tool, Google has added such features as the ability to take a look at the YouTube community's comments and ratings about a video and to drill down on feedback to a particular country or region in the world.

Google has deepened the analytics available to people and companies uploading video to its YouTube video social network, providing better tools to see how viewers are reacting to the content.

While available to the casual uploader, YouTube Insight is really geared towards companies and advertisers tapping the video site for marketing products and services, helping them monitor viewer activity and fine-tune strategy.

YouTube plans to open up its Insight analytics tool, which video uploaders can use to track a variety of metrics related to clips' usage, viewership and popularity.

Insight, launched a year ago, is a standalone tool that isn't integrated with other analytics software, not even with Google Analytics, and that lacks automated functionality to import and export data.

That, however, will likely change soon.
