Subject: Cambridge, MA, USA: Visiting Member Technical Staff - Planning and Scheduling Under Uncertainty at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL)

Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Visiting Member of Technical Staff in the Data Analytics Group. The successful candidate will be expected to perform original research in the area of planning and scheduling under uncertainty. Further qualifications are detailed below.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and development in the area of optimal planning and scheduling for problems with large number of states and significant uncertainty. Specific topics include sequential decision making in factorial Markov decision processes, dynamic resource allocation, optimal control, and approximate dynamic programming. Devise new research ideas and pursue them all the way to realization in prototypes. Assist in preparing patent applications. Publication in major conferences and journals is encouraged.
  • Propose new directions and projects related to planning and scheduling under uncertainty and applications thereof. Assist in preparing research proposals.
  • Transfer technology to business units. Travel to MELCO locations in Japan and elsewhere will be necessary.
Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering. For applicants without industrial work experience, dissertation topic should be related to planning and scheduling under uncertainty. Fresh graduates are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Strong background in Markov decision processes, combinatorial optimization, and dynamic programming.
  • Solid knowledge of algorithms and algorithmic complexity, and demonstrated ability to invent new algorithms and analyze their computational complexity.
  • Excellent programming skills in Matlab, C/C++, and Java are required; experience with CPLEX a plus.
  • Experience in the power generation and/or HVAC&R industries, as well as knowledge of machine learning, data visualization, and exploratory data analysis a plus.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are a must. Good inter-personal skills are essential.
  • Applicant must be quick to adapt to project needs, and able to work on multiple projects.
