Online advertising is one of the biggest growth opportunities for Microsoft. This business currently generates billions of dollars in revenue for Microsoft with tremendous opportunity ahead, given how industry wide advertising is shifting to digital media. Join us and help take our digital advertising capabilities to the next level with our initiatives in Audience Intelligence. Our group is chartered to develop an industry leading targeting system for all our ad products and services. Effective targeting helps an advertiser reach their core audience and drives high value propositions to end users. We as a company are betting on this initiative to differentiate our advertising offerings and to further grow our advertising revenue.

Audience Intelligence enables the discovery and inference of user profiles, intent and interaction while respecting privacy and trust, with the ultimate goal of maximizing benefits for users, advertisers and publishers. We are seeking a data mining scientist/researcher to provide applied research and data mining expertise in this area. This is an exciting position, providing the candidate an opportunity to solve high industry impact business problems in the online advertising space using information retrieval, machine learning, data mining and statistical methodologies.

Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and manage applied research in the areas of user segmentation, profiling, and targeting.
  • Research and experiment on data mining algorithms for user segmentation and dynamic segment expansion.
  • Utilize data mining technologies and use various data sources, some of which may include MSN web usage, search query, demographic, subscription, and 3rd party data, to gain insight into Internet user behavior that will set the foundation for Microsoft targeting offerings and data services.
  • Provide complete solutions to business problems using data analysis, data mining techniques, and statistics.
  • Work on projects may include case studies, methodology research, tool evaluations, model development/refinement and deployment.
  • Serve or grow into subject matter expert on user profiling, ad targeting, and personalization for Microsoft online services.
Qualifications:
  • Preferred experience solving ad targeting, marketing and business problems using data analysis and data mining on large scale real-world business data sets
  • Experience with various data analysis tools, data mining tools, and statistical packages
  • Familiarity with applying data mining techniques (i.e. classification, clustering, association mining, forecasting), statistics and information retrieval methods to real-world data
  • Ability to work independently or to manage a team that will research innovative solutions to challenging business problems
  • Ability to collaborate with partners and drive research projects end to end, from initial engagements with the engineering or business customer, to the research phase, and finally through to production
  • Superior communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Attention to detail and data accuracy
  • Good scripting and rapid prototyping skills, i.e. preferred fluency in the following: SQL, Perl, C#
  • MS degree or PhD (preferred) in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent.
