Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 10:10:29 +0100 (MET) From: Yves Kodratoff, yk@lri.fr Subject: CFP: ACAI-99 Workshop on "Text Mining" , Crete, 5-16 July 1999 Web: http://www.iit.demokritos.gr/skel/eetn/acai99 Call for Participation: ACAI-99 Workshop on "Text Mining" (TM) Organized by Yves Kodratoff (CNRS & Univ. Paris-Sud) and Udo Hahn (Univ. Freiburg) within the Advanced Course on Artificial Intelligence 1999 (ACAI-99), Crete, 5-16 July 1999 The topic of TM is very controversial at present. It needs more discussion among scientists in order to define what it is exactly. In principle, we would like to promote during the workshop that TM is obtained by a balanced integration of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Data Mining (DM). We would like to welcome contributions coming from both the NLP and the DM communities as soon as they discover some kind of knowledge in the texts. Note that "knowledge" means here "some kind of information that is directly usable by an agent, be it human or not" . Texts contain more often this kind of information, but the burden of handling very large amounts of texts might make it necessary to introduce automation, and texts become again nothing but a kind of particularly hard-to-handle data. Experiences in the handling of these difficulties will be particularly welcome. It may also happen that automatic analysis brings to the fore some knowledge that humans hardly recognize (for instance, unexpected links between the syntax and the meaning of a text). Demos of existing systems, whenever possible, would be very useful: submit your demo the contact organizer (YK). Send your proposal to Yves Kodratoff, LRI, Bat. 490, Univ. Paris-Sud, F-91405 Orsay (yk@lri.fr) who will dispatch it Udo Hahn and to qualified reviewers.
