I just wanted to share with you a great news, that Jim Gray, who happens to be serving as KDD-99 Industry Sessions Co-Chair, has just won the very prestigious ACM Turing Award for 1998 for his seminal contributions on the theory and practice of transactions during his long and illustrious career. When I had joined IBM's Almaden Research Center in 1980, Jim had already written his seminal "Notes on Database Operating Systems" in which he outlined all aspects of database transaction management. Jim becomes the third winner of the Turing Award from the database field, after Charles Bachman and E.F. (Ted) Codd.
