Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 16:41:21 +0100 From: ROSS DONALD KING rdk@aber.ac.uk Subject: Two Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions In Computational Biology The Computational Biology group of the Department of Computer Science, University of Wales, Aberystwyth is a World leader in the application of Knowledge Discovery techniques to scientific problems in biology and chemistry. We have recently won two more research grants in bioinformatics and chemoinformatics. 1) The Robot Scientist Project This project will be to integrate machine learning with laboratory robotics to produce the first closed loop scientific discovery system. The application will be to help analyse the flood of data coming from new biological techniques which allow the complete internal inventories of the working parts of cells to be examined. The understanding of this data is the greatest open challenge to biology. 2) Drug Design The aim is to extend the successful application of Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) to drug design to include information from protein-ligand structures. ILP is the machine learning technique best suited to drug design problems. The research will be done in collaboration with Professor D. Kell (Institute of Biological Sciences), Professor S. Muggleton (University of York), Professor S. Oliver (UMIST), Glaxo Wellcome, and Prolifix. We are interested in candidates with Ph.Ds in: data mining, machine learning, bioinformatics, molecular modelling, computational chemistry, and other relevant disciplines who are interested in interdisciplinary work. The appointments will be for a fixed term of three years on Grade 1A. Informal enquiries to Ross D. King on 01970-622432 or rdk@aber.ac.uk.
